Barry Jonassen Award

Preamble

This award was established in 1999 is named in memory of Barry Jonassen, a keen freshwater angler and biologist and passionate supporter of ASFB. It is awarded to support research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of freshwater fish biology or freshwater fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates).

Value of Award

The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society president and committee but is approximately $1,000. The Society reserves the right not to make an award in any year.

Closing date for applications

  • Applications to be submitted in May or June in each year (depending on annual conference timing, and specific dates will be on the annual announcement).  A decision and notification will be within 4 weeks of deadline, and formally annunced during the annual conference.

Conditions

  • Applicants must be full time honours or post-graduate students in the first or second year or their degree at an Australian or New Zealand university.
  • Applicants must be a student member of ASFB.

Process for application

  • Download the application form.
  • Applications consist of a two page research proposal on the proposed or underway research, written during the student's first or second year of enrolment.
  • Applications should include:
    i. Title of project, Name, University, Supervisor, Degree enrolled for, Year commenced, Contact details.
    ii. Seven line summary
    iii. Aims, Background, Significance, Methods
    iv. Brief budget (with respect to the value of the award) and justification.
    v. Signature of applicant and supervisor.
