Age-based monitoring of sea mullet in NSW - when, where, why and how?

Kimberley Smith

New South Wales Fisheries, CRONULLA, AUSTRALIA

THEME: ASFB

The age structure of a fishery catch reveals much about the fish stock from which it came. However, the information is valuable only when it is based on sound aging techniques and appropriate sampling methods. What is the best time of year to collect otoliths? How frequently should I sample? Which locations should I sample? This paper answers such questions in relation to the sea mullet fishery in NSW, which has been subject to age-based monitoring since 1995. The aging validation process and regional variation in otolith ring formation is discussed. A multi-variate method of determining appropriate sampling frequency and location is also described.
