Creating a National System of Marine Protected Areas that is Comprehensive, Adequate, Representative and Popular!
Australian Marine Conservation Society, BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA
Theme: TH1
The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) has been working with government agencies and the community to develop Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)around the Australian coastline since 1965. Although some progress has been made and Australia is often described as a world leader in marine conservation, we are still a long way from having a national system of MPAs that is comprehensive, adequate or representative. This paper focuses on the benefits of a national system of MPAs and describes some of the major impediments to further progress. The AMCS’s “vision” for an Australian system of MPAs that can potentially benefit all Australians and the nation’s outstanding marine environment is proposed.
