Rehabilitation of Freshwater Fisheries

edited by I. G. Cowx

Book review, December 1995

Published by Fishing News Books
(a division of Blackwell Scientific Publications)
54 University St Carlton 3053

First published 1994, 485pp.

This book consists of a series of papers selected to highlight many of the key issues arising from the proceedings of two recent European symposiums. The first, on the topic of Mass Removal of (Unwanted) Fish in Large Inland Waters, was held in Lahti, Finland in June 1991, and mainly discussed methods used for mass removal of fish, the impact of intensive fishing on fish populations and the feasibility of using predatory fish to regulate fisheries. The second symposium, Rehabilitation of Inland Fisheries, was held at the University of Hull, UK in April 1992, with the objective to 'advance the scientific and management basis of fisheries rehabilitation strategies, and to provide a medium for the dissemination and exchange of ideas'. In attempting to achieve this wonderfully moral, original and earth shattering goal it covered various aspects of rehabilitation methodology including habitat restoration, stocking and introductions, environmental and water quality factors affecting fish, eutrophication, and bio-manipulation and management measures, in relation to both commercial and recreational fisheries.

Comprising of 43 papers the book is divided into 5 sections, with the first paper in each section being a synopsis/introduction or theory of the subject area. Papers come from throughout Europe, China, Africa, US and Brazil. Australian contributions come from Steve Swales (2 papers) on conservation strategies and habitat restoration models, and the Harris and Mallen-Cooper camp on fish passage.

I. Management of Inland Fisheries

Eight papers on management issues. In his introduction, Cowx makes the pertinent observation that there is a paucity of follow up information on the success or failure of rehabilitation measures with few studies being carried out to evaluate long term results. There is a fundamental need for such information to justify or modify such measures.

II. Predator Enhancement

Three papers, one theoretical and two case studies in a reservoir and fish communities.

III. Habitat modification and Remedial Measures

A comprehensive array of 10 papers covering IFIM, riparian ecotones, environmental factors in rivers and reservoirs, impacts of impoundments, fish passage, impacts of logging, aquatic vegetation and the conversion of mine ponds.

IV. Stocking and Introductions

Had this section been entitled 'Stockings and Introductions' it may have illicited visions of a fancy escort agency and at least moderate excitement. However, it didn't, instead providing 11 papers, mostly case studies of stockings of the non-lingerie variety. Included are 2 updates on the Lake Victoria/ Nile perch fiasco.

V. Water Quality Aspects

Eleven papers, mainly case studies on the deterioration or recovery of populations following changes to water quality. Also changes to water quality following the addition, removal or alteration of the mix of species.

”This book provides a valuable set of quality scientific papers on the subject matter addressed. It is well presented and ideally weighted for throwing at inlaws, outlaws or unwanted dogs. It is also ideally suited both in weight and size for swatting unwanted Insecta, with an apparently wipe-able cover. This volume provides an international compliment to several ASFB proceedings but priced at $176.00 it makes them look pretty good value” - John Koehn, October 1995.
