Aquatic life in freshwater ponds: A guide to the identification and ecology of life in aquaculture ponds and farm dams in south eastern australia.

B. A. Ingram, J.H. Hawking and R.J. Shiel

Identification Guide No. 9 (1997)

This publication is an introductory guide to the aquatic flora and fauna of aquaculture ponds, farm dams and other stillwaters of south eastern Australia. This is the first publication specifically written for students, aquaculturists and researchers working in these unique waterbodies.

Information is provided on sampling methods, the ecology of aquaculture ponds and the biology, ecology and identification of a wide range of aquatic organisms. These include algae and other aquatic plants, protozoa, rotifers, snails and mussels, aquatic worms, water mites, crustaceans, aquatic insects, fish, tadpoles and frogs, turtles, waterbirds, aquatic mammals and many other groups.

The publication includes simplified identification keys to common taxa which are illustrated with 96 colour photographs and over 250 drawings, a glossary of technical and biological terms, 316 references and a checklist of aquatic organisms known to occur in freshwater ponds and farm dams of south eastern Australia.
