Curtis Champion

Dr Curtis Champion is a Research Scientist with NSW Fisheries and an Adjunct Lecturer at Southern Cross University. He completed his PhD in 2019 at the University of Tasmania and CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, where he developed spatial models to quantify the effects of historical and projected environmental change on the distribution and condition of fisheries resources. His current research spans a range of topics, including the effects of regional-scale oceanography on the distribution of fished and habitat-forming species, the impacts of environmental change on the condition and nutritional quality of seafood, vulnerability assessment methods for marine species and the development of fishery-relevant indices to support climate adaptation. Over the past 3 years Curtis has led the NSW Fisheries Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment project. Curtis’ presentation at ASFB 2022 will encompass multiple aspects of seafood vulnerability to climate change, including shifts in species geographic distributions and alterations to the condition and quality (e.g. nutritional and sensory properties) of fished species.
